BOOKS
May and June are months we celebrate parents. Here are a selection of books which focus on Mama and Papa Bear.
“Father’s Day is nothing but a greeting card holiday,” is what Papa says. If that’s the way Papa feels, then his family just won’t celebrate this year. But, as the big day rolls around, and there’s no card, no gift, and no breakfast in bed, Papa’s spirits sink lower and lower. That’s when the cubs spring on him their wonderful Papa’s Day surprise! This is a wonderful story about the love a family has for one another. Mama and the children work so hard to let Papa know how important he is. They create a Father's Day Papa will never forget.

Mother’s Day is coming, and Mama Bear knows that Papa and the cubs are going to surprise her. She also knows that Mother’s Day in the tree house is going to be one big, messy success that she’ll have to clean up. But maybe, just maybe, Papa and the cubs have cooked up a really big surprise for Mama this year! Young listeners will love the delicious feeling of being in on the surprise and observing the fact Mama Bear thinks she knows everything that is going on, when even she is surprised by the last page. A free Mother's Day card is attached.

A practical, down-to-earth guide to handling the very toughest parenting challenges. Combining humor with the trademark homespun common sensibility that parents have come to depend upon from Stan and Jan Berenstain, each chapter of The Bear Essentials covers a specific tricky or worrisome passage of child-rearing. For example, “No Two Alike” is about promoting individuality and self-esteem. “Weighing in on Obesity” deals with one of the most serious and rapidly emerging problems among the under 12 set. “Expletives Deleted—Please!” helps parents cope with foul language.

"Grownups and cubs get quite a surprise when they see themselves through the others' eyes."
Brother and Sister Bear's parents always seem to be nagging them about something, so the cubs decide to show how their parents annoy them by creating a play entitled "The Trouble with Grownups." Then Mama and Papa put on their own role-reversal skit, and everyone winds up learning something about themselves. At the end they remind the cubs that they will probably be parents someday too, which gives the cubs something to think about.
