In honor of the first month of a new year, we are going to concentrate on several Berenstain firsts this month.
The Big Honey Hunt
If you only know the Bear family though some of their more recent books, you might be surprised to learn of the first Berenstain Bears books. They are rhyming books about life in the tree house “down a sunny dirt road in Bear Country." In the very first book, an empty honey pot sends Papa Bear and Small Bear (later to be known as Brother Bear) on a quest for honey. Mama tells them to get it at the honey store, but Papa Bear, however, has other ideas. "Not at the store. Oh, no, Small Bear. If a bear is smart, If a bear knows how, He goes on a honey hunt. New Baby
Small Bear outgrows the bed his father made him when he was a baby--and none too soon. In 1973, the Berenstains added a baby girl to the Bear family and found that they had given birth to a new line of stories, First Time Books. With the arrival of Sister Bear, Small Bear became Brother Bear, but little else changed about the Bear family dynamic. "This brightly illustrated story tells of a youngster's happy acceptance of a new addition to the family,” says Booklist, “and how Mama and Papa Bear assist him with the adjustment.".

The Berenstain Bears and Baby Makes Five
There's a brand new baby in the Bear Family's tree house--little Honey Bear! Naturally, the cute
baby bear is the center of attention. And babies sure are a lot of work! At first, Sister is not at all sure she likes the new arrangement. Fortunately, Mother Bear pulls out the
old videos of when Sister Bear was a baby, and Sister Bear sees that
she got the same treatment that Honey is getting now. At bedtime
Sister Bear asks, ''Mama could we take a peek at the baby first?''
''You know something?' she whispers, "She is kind of cute.''
