BOOKS

The Holidays are about both giving and receiving and the Bears do plenty of both. The meaning of the season is beautifully evoked in the classic, The Berenstain Bears Save Christmas, but that is just the most recent book to touch on the holiday theme. This month we look at some seasonal favorites from the Tree House and maybe your house as well.

The Bears' Christmas

From the very beginning, the Bears have had a special place for Christmas. In this book, originally published in 1970, there's a whole lot to learn one Christmas morning in Bear Country when Papa Bear teaches his son a thing or two about skiing, skating and sledding. Written in rhyme, this is also a great book for getting a reader interested in winter outdoor activities.

The Berenstain Bears' Christmas Tree

During the Bears' search for a Christmas tree they are reminded of what Christmas is really about. Papa Bear has a problem, every tree he picks to chop down is home to a fellow furred or feathered creature. Papa doesn't have the heart to make them homeless and though he returns home empty-handed, he does have a brilliant idea! Join in the holiday revelry as the Bears brighten their forest home with lots of bangles, bells and colorful balls.

This book was inspired by the 1979 animated film now available on DVD. The film is an example of the classic traditional hand-painted animation style of the era. To those familiar with and appreciative of this style it is a beautiful example of a virtually lost art in this age of digitally manufactured animation. It is recommended for those nostalgic for a little old-fashioned Christmas charm. With terrific songs as well.

The Berenstain Bears Meet Santa Bear

How can Santa's sleigh land when there's no snow on the ground? How can he possibly fit down all those skinny-minny little chimneys? And how come every mall has a different Santa? "Christmas is such a special time of year that very special, almost magical things can happen," says Papa Bear. "And the most magical thing of all is Santa Bear." Sister thinks that Santa Bear has the hardest job making all those presents and then delivering them. Papa says that Santa Bear has the best job because he gets to give gifts to cubs everywhere. When the cubs give gifts to their parents, they realize that Papa was right - it feels better to give than to receive.

The Berenstain Bears Think of Those in Need

"Almost all bears discover, in a little while, that what they've outgrown makes quite a pile."

Stuff in the closets, stuff in the drawers, stuff in the attic--too much stuff everywhere! When Mama Bear decides that the family has accumulated too many old toys, books and games, they sort through all their extra stuff and take it to the Old Bears Home, the Beartown Children's Hospital and the Bears-Who-Care store. While this classic book is not strictly seasonal, it carries the message of the season.

The Berenstain Bears Save Christmas

This year it seems everyone in Bear Country has gone Christmas-crazy, and Mama Bear is concerned the true holiday spirit has been lost. Santa worries also, and is ready to cancel Christmas! Now it's up to the Berenstain Bears to change his mind.
