THE BEAR MUSEUM

The First First Time Books

ADD TO YOUR COLLECTION!
In 1973, Stan and Jan added a baby girl to the Bear family and found that they had given birth to a new line of stories, which they called First Time Books. With the arrival of Sister Bear, Small Bear became Brother Bear, but little else changed about the Bear family dynamic. However, the style and production of their books had evolved. The first Bear books featured delicately crosshatched drawings, hand drawn color separations and simple text. First Time Books had streamlined, but more technically accomplished figures, and a more sophisticated vocabulary.

This scene came directly from the Berenstains’ family experience. Son Leo often sat in Jan’s lap for book readings, but while pregnant with their second son Michael, Leo noticed that Jan’s lap was getting smaller. After his brother was born, Leo exclaimed, “Mommy, you got your lap back!”
