THE BEAR MUSEUM Inside, Outside, Upside DownWhen Stan and Jan were asked to compose a story for the new "Bright and Early Books" series, the phrase "inside, outside, upside down" came to them. Despite the Bears’ instant popularity, in 1968 the Berenstains were asked by their editor, Theodor Geisel (aka Dr. Suess) to use characters other than bears for their next book. He wanted the Berenstains to experience the freedom he had creating real and imaginary animals. Although Stan and Jan were reluctant, they produced a series of preliminary drawings featuring a red gorilla, a beret-wearing crow, and a two-toed sloth. Geisel and the company salesmen liked the book but realized that the Berenstains had struck a resonant chord with their Bears, and asked for the book to be remade as a bear tale. Jan re-invented the story at their backyard picnic table, transforming it into a simpler bear book that has remained timeless. Inside, Outside, Upside Down has sold more than three million copies.
